Zucker Punch - Is this how the cookie crumbles?

After “missing” and/or “mishandling” a number of controversies, Facebook fell by 20% last week shedding US$120Billion of its value (or about the same amount as 4 Twitter companies) in just one afternoon – representing the largest single day collapse [by market value] for any publicly traded company ever. After being savaged by attacks on various fronts – from political to privacy scandals – the once-mighty social media giant is standing exposed and vulnerable with all that once seeming invincibility shorn away.

Here is a contrary opinion you may not like – we are happy that Mark Zuckerberg is at the helm of Facebook and refute any calls for him to step down. Why is this our view? Because he puts the interest of the Community Good, before profits.

At least that’s what he 'awkwardly' told the US Congress this past April in the midst of all the scandals – from Cambridge Analytica to the alleged role in the 2016 election and fake news – Mark Zuckerberg was hell-bent on significantly increasing Facebook’s investment in security and ready to hire thousands of new employees to execute this mandate:

“I’ve directed our teams to invest so much in security?—?on top of the other investments we’re making?—?that it will significantly impact our profitability going forward. But I want to be clear about what our priority is: protecting our community is more important than maximizing our profits.”

Of course many didn’t like it. Wall Street and the Internet cheered when they saw the social media giant crumbling down the charts - as if to say “good for you” and blame it on Zuckerberg. But we opine a different view. We are happy that Zuckerberg walked the walk [rather than the plank] by putting the security of the community over profits. Even if that has to cost him and his shareholders around US$120Bn in Facebook’s value.

We know where is this all coming from, Cambridge Analytica stealing our personal data; Russians meddling with our elections; the spread of fake news; to even Trump becoming president. All because of tampering made on Facebook. But let's not forget what Facebook also gave us. That with fake news, Facebook transformed the way real news is distributed; that with every panic and confusion in one part of the world, it gave cohesion in another that [perhaps] fired up the Arab Spring [or winter]. That with every bot, it also connected new people to progress and exchange ideas; and with every new enemy made, it connected us with long-lost family or a loved one; that even if it gave us Trump, it also once gave us Obama.

Zuckerberg’s responsibility is beyond you and me and US$120Bn of value. There is no one on earth right now – not Tim Cook, Donald Trump, Rupert Murdoch or even the Pope who could powerfully direct and influence 2.23 Billion active users with the click of a button. We are so glad that even if it were the bitter pill, he took medicine knowingly that it is for the greater good of the Internet community,

Sometimes, we just have to look at the Facebook glass that is still half full; and that the faucet is still open.
